Volubilis is an archaeological site located in Morocco, in the Meknès-Tafilalet region, near the city of Meknès. Its history dates back more than 2,000 years to when it was a thriving Roman city.
The origins of Volubilis date back to the Punic period, when it was a Carthaginian settlement. However, it was under Roman rule that the city reached its zenith. It was annexed by the Roman Empire around 44-42 BC, during the reign of Emperor Claudius. During the next two centuries, Volubilis prospered as a wealthy and important city in the Roman province of North Africa.
Like many other Roman centers, Volubilis possessed an elaborate system of infrastructure, including roads, aqueducts, public baths, temples, a forum and luxurious residential villas. The city was renowned for its mosaics, which are still visible today and represent an important artistic treasure.
Volubilis was also an important agricultural centre, thanks to the fertility of the surrounding region. Its inhabitants mainly cultivated wheat, barley, olives and grapes, and the city became an important supplier of agricultural products for the Roman Empire.
Towards the end of the third century, the Roman Empire suffered a series of crises and Volubilis began to decline. It was gradually abandoned and its structures were progressively dismantled for use elsewhere.
Over the following centuries, Volubilis was forgotten and buried under layers of sand and debris. In the 19th century, the first archaeological explorations began to bring to light the ancient Roman city, which became an object of interest for scholars and visitors.
Today, Volubilis is an archaeological site of great importance and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ruins of the Roman city have been partially restored and offer a unique opportunity to explore ancient Roman life in North Africa.
The history of Volubilis represents a precious piece of Morocco's rich cultural and historical heritage and testifies to the influence of the Roman Empire in the region during antiquity.
