Alabama and Auburn football players got into a sideline ruckus during the third quarter of Saturday’s Iron Bowl. After the play ended, DeVonta Smith and Malachi Moore were both assessed personal fouls for the Crimson Tide.
The play began with an incomplete pass from Auburn’s Payton Thorne, that Malcolm Simmons dropped. Then, on the Auburn sideline, a fight began.
Smith appeared to be the first Alabama player in the fray. Others involved from the Alabama side included Jihaad Campbell and Jordan Renaud.
Auburn’s KeAndre Lambert-Smith seemed to be the most-involved Tiger.
Officials separated the two sides, with Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack running across the field to assist. Auburn was not penalized for its role in the fracas.
“I think both players (Alabama’s Smith and Auburn’s Lambert-Smith) should’ve been involved with the penalty,” Bill LeMonnier, ABC rules analyst, said during the game’s television broadcast. “It’s time, too, to send a message that you need to control your team and maybe it costs you in a disqualification.”
Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer was visibly livid after the play, appearing to want the Tigers penalized as well. Auburn continued driving down the field after the play, and scored a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 28-14
