Visit to the Drago Butterfly Garden
The butterflies that fly in the butterfly garden reach it in the form of a chrysalis, since this is the phase of their life cycle in which it is easier to transport them. They come from different parts of the world , where they are bred in captivity and never captured from the wild. When they arrive at the laboratory they are placed in hatching cages under controlled environmental conditions. After hatching, the butterflies fly over the garden and feed on artificial nectar prepared in the laboratory.
Thanks to meticulous and conscientious breeding work, visitors will be able to see how a butterfly is born every day of the year . The plants in the garden are the right ones to maintain the habitat of the different species. The butterflies only lay their eggs on certain plants , the team first finds out what plant it is, brings several specimens to the enclosure and performs an acclimatization process, this process is not always satisfactory even when all the variables are given correctly, so many times it must be resort to manual insemination.
The cultivation of plants that will feed the caterpillars is free of pesticides , which makes their care very delicate, any pest is a small catastrophe that can only be solved by entering a natural "predator", likewise if the plants are acquired in nurseries they must be quarantined to avoid contamination of substances that are harmful to butterflies.
The collection of eggs occurs once or twice a day depending on the activity of each butterfly and it is a very meticulous task. The eggs are deposited in petri dishes in the laboratory and are kept in the appropriate conditions of humidity and temperature. The caterpillars are fed with their respective plants, and it is that these little plump ones are big eaters that increase 5,000 times their weight.
After molting four or five times, the caterpillars finally pupate . When the hatching date is close, it is hung in the laboratory cabinet so that visitors can enjoy this wonderful moment.
