If you want more power than a single, rechargeable battery can provide or you want to know if a DIY charger can run more than one battery, then this video has your answers. I salvage rechargeable batteries for free from many different types of devices. Today I am showing how to use more than one of those batteries in a DIY charger at the same time. The goal is to keep the available voltage unchanged while increasing the run time of the batteries or battery packs that I show how to make. This video shows how to choose batteries to put together; how to test and prepare each; and then how to safely charge and use them. Note: all parts can be purchased on line and the project can easily be made in one sitting.
Battery holder: purchased from Amazon; abcGoodefg 2 Slotsx3.7V 18650 Battery Holder Case Plastic Battery Storage Box with Pin (6 Pcs 2 Solts); roughly $1.50 each.
Key parts needed to make the phone charger used in this video:
- Step up power module to change the battery output into the 5v needed to charge a phone. I got the one used in the video on Amazon (DROK Ultra Small Mini DC Power Module; part #090399).
- Charging board - TP4056 w/protection circuit module - "Makerfocus 10pcs TP4056 Charging Module 5V Micro USB 1A 18650 Lithium Battery Charging Board with Protection Charger Module" ($0.90 each on Amazon). The TP4056 w/protection circuit module prevents overcharging and over discharging batteries.
- Project box from Amazon - "VNDEFUL 5pcs black waterproof plastic electric project case" (3.94X2.36X0.98)
- Plastic case used for project box ($0.50 on Amazon)
- Quick connector / terminal block - "30Pcs, 2P CH2 Quick Connector Cable Clamp Terminal Block Spring Connector Wire LED Strip Light Wire Connecting" ($0.20 each on Amazon)

WARNING: Li-ion batteries can have quite catastrophic failures if they are not handled properly. In addition to the warnings in the video make sure to do some extra research on your own if you are not used to working with these types of batteries. Key notes: do not puncture, crush, short or otherwise mishandle the internal cells of battery packs. Fire and/or explosion can easily occur. You have been warned; you are fully responsible for any and all results of your actions should you attempt to recreate any of the actions shown in this video!
