This gas well in Uzbekistan is about to be peacefully nuked but why?
It all started in 1963 when this gas well went out of control at the depth of 2.4 kilometers. For the next 3 years, 12 million cubic meters of valuable fossil fuel burnt every day. They tried everything to choke it off, but those only provoked new, smaller blowouts elsewhere.
Having exhausted all conventional means, the Soviet scientists built a 30-kiloton nuclear bomb, twice more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima.
Two boreholes were drilled down to the blowout area and the bomb was lowered to a depth of 1.4 kilometers. The shaft was then filled with cement to contain the radiation. On September 30, 1966, the bomb was detonated, producing underground shockwaves that compressed the geological material around the well. It successfully sealed off the well, and killed the blaze in only 23 seconds. Despite concerns, no surface contamination was ever detected.
