Leonora is a town in the goldfields Esperance region of WA. Located 833 kilometres northeast of Perth.

The town is known for its mining from the past to the present day. Gold was discovered in Leonora in 1895 by South African Edward 'Doo dah' Sullivan.

In the two years that followed a number of rich finds resulted in many claims being pegged. The towns of Leonora and Gwalia were established.

The mine was originally established by Herbert Hoover in 1897. He went on to become the president of the United States by 1899.

There were three hotels, three bakeries, a post office, the town also had a police and fire station, banks, Leonora also had its own newspaper and a racecourse by 1908.

Today many of those old buildings still stand. Leonora is the service centre for the mining exploration and pastoral industries. The township has a number of hotels plus a caravan park and motel accommodation.

Whilst in the town be sure to visit Gwalia a living ghost town that allows you to experience mining history first hand. Hoover house is open to the public as a cafe and B & B. Tther places of interest include the terraces, Malcolm Dam and Gwalia Museum.

If you're planning a trip to Western Australia keep Leonora in mind. It has a wealth of history, amazing people and scenery.

You never know you might just be lucky enough to unearth a nugget or two.
