This week, we had our first opportunity to palpate (touch) and manual muscle test. These are fundamental skills that are needed as a physical therapist.
It might seem as though these skills are ridiculously easy (which I am sure they will be with practice), but learning these skills were so extremely FUN! After several weeks of just lecture, we finally were able to get our hands dirty and get hands-on.
Palpations are used to identify bony landmarks, feel for muscle activation, and pretty much anything you can think of that relates to the sensation of touch.
Manual Muscle Testing (MMT) is used to test the strength and potential contractility of the muscle being tested. For example, if you had some stuff going on with your shoulder muscle, a physical therapist could utilize the MMT test to assess your strength. This test then can be used as a reference to either eliminate or enhance further investigations on what is actually going on. Is it a muscle issue? Nerve issue? Pain? Maybe it's structural.
This week was great. It finally feels like this DPT program is actually taking me through the first steps of being a physical Therapist.
