The Golden Goose Award was founded in 2012 by AAAS and eight founding partners in response to a call from Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN) to demonstrate the tremendous societal benefits of federally funded scientific research. The Award highlights and honors examples of scientific studies or research that may have seemed silly, odd, or obscure but ultimately led, often serendipitously, to major breakthroughs that have had significant societal impact. In telling the stories behind these advances, the Award also aims to demonstrate that scientific outcomes build upon each other and the technological advances that flow from them cannot easily be predicted at the outset of a particular scientific research project.
