People are always amazed at all the fig trees we're growing here in Kansas.
"Are these for sale?" they often ask.
"No, sorry," I say.
They look at me incredulously. "Are you some kind of hoarder?"
I laugh and shake my head, then explain that I'm growing these for fellow fig collectors around the world. There are many hundreds if not thousands of named fig varieties, and there's never enough of the best ones to go around, so scarcity has always been a big problem for collectors in our hobby. The scarcity drives the price of tiny 1 gallon fig trees up to well over $100 for some varieties, and even much higher for others. I've personally bought some for $300 and one for $800, and I've seen some sell on ebay for over a thousand, up to $1,500...for just a 1gal plant! So when I offered to grow hundreds of rare varieties for my fellow fig collectors at $7 per tree (basically at cost, for zero profit), I was swamped with requests. Hence the thousands of fig trees!
