Welcome to Episode 15 of The Luma World Podcast!
This episode we are chatting with Ms. Prachi Hatkar who is a Ph.D. scholar and a project fellow at CAMPA Recovery of Dugongs and their habitats in India, Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun.
Dugongs are found in India in the Gulf of Mannar, PalkBay, Gulf of Kutch and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Dugongs are cousins of manatees and share a similar plump appearance, but have a dolphin fluke-like tail. And unlike manatees, which use freshwater areas, the dugongs are strictly a marine mammal. Dugongs are also the only marine mammal species that are entirely herbivorous.
Prachi has been working on Dugong conservation for sometime now and here, she shares some interesting anecdotes about Dugongs and marine life conservation in general in India. Her current research interests also include understanding the ecology of endangered species, diversity assessment of marine life and connecting the conserving ecosystem benefits along with livelihood.
Listen to Prachi talk about what made her choose marine biology as a career and the challenges she faced while pursuing her career path.
