Gilson carries a vast selection of pocket soil penetrometers that are designed for solid performance and reliability in laboratory or field testing of compacted soil to estimate in-place unconfined compressive strength of cohesive soils.
The Gilson HM-500 Soil Pocket Penetrometer is made of corrosion-resistant stainless-steel and performs well in field or laboratory testing to measure unconfined compressive strength of cohesive soils. Scale units are shown in tsf (tons per square foot) or kg/cm2 (kilogram force per square centimeter).
Also known as a hand penetrometer, Occupational Safety and Health Administration lists this handheld lightweight device (2014 Classification of Soils for Excavations) as required equipment for manual testing of unconfined compressive strength of cohesive soils. The HMA-15 Adapter Foot Attachment (Sold separately) increases the probe diameter to 1in (25mm) for 16 times the piston area for readings in very soft soils.
The Gilson HM-504A Pocket Shear Vane Set is designed for quick estimations of approximate shear strength of cohesive soils whether in the lab or field. The set includes a manually rotated driver, three vanes in varying ranges (Standard, Large (sensitive) and Small (high capacity)) and a carrying case. Readings on the dial read from 0-1 kg/cm² (kilogram force per square centimeter) with (1 kg/cm² is approximately equal to 1tsf).
And the Gilson HM-502 Pocket Geotester dial penetrometer set estimates the unconfined compressive strength of soils. Values are displayed on a dial gauge in tsf (tons per square foot) or kg/cm2 (kilogram force per square centimeter). The set comes with a standard 0.25in (6.35mm) diameter penetration plunger, as well as 10, 15, 20, and 25mm diameter plungers for a range of soil testing.
Gilson also offers the HM-559A Static Cone Penetrometer, a hand-held device used with a penetration cone, the SF-10 and SF-20 Dynamic Cone Penetrometers that provide quick field estimations of soil shear strengths at depths up to 6ft (1.8m), (With optional extensions), and the HM-560 Proctor Penetrometer Set (Meets ASTM D6951) that estimates penetration resistance of fine grained soils, to make Gilson’s Soil Penetrometers the right choice for your materials testing lab.
