Making DIY Vactrol style optocoupler using LED, LDR, shrink tube, plastic and paper. This kind of optocoupler can be used on many circuits that require a voltage/current controlled resistor, such as VCA, audio compressors, limiters, expanders, VCO, voltage controlled LFO, phaser, VCF, etc. By varying the current on the LED (Light-Emitting Diode) in order to control its brightness, we also change the resistance of the LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) receiving the LED light. Although not suitable for applications requiring fast response to control transients (sudden changes on control signal) this kind of optocoupler can substitute the use of OTA (Operational Transconductance Amplifiers) for a fraction of the cost.
