Kraków Water is the biggest water enterprise in Małopolska, Poland, serving more than a million users.

High quality and safety water straight from the tap is the result of using the latest technologies in decades by Kraków Water. Implementing that technologies are often pioneering projects which anyone in the waste and water industry has not deployed before.
One of the key parts of Kraków Water is the Płaszów Sewage Treatment Plant.

Since 2007, Kraków Water has been using the AVEVA System Platform, thanks to which they collect data from all their systems, which allows them to have full knowledge about the actual use of pumps and their energy demand.

In 2017, a thorough modernization of the control system for this treatment plant was carried out. It was result of the project called "Energically Passive Sewage Treatment Plant". The project was implemented as part of the Generator of Ecological Concepts Program by Kraków Water which was the leader of the consortium composed of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. It was co-financed by the National Center for Research and Development. Thanks to the solutions which were implemented at that time, e.g. neural networks, it became possible to thoroughly analyze data about its work and identify areas for possible optimization.

This has become the foundation for the next innovative project.

A solution based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms was implemented. It is responsible for optimizing the operation of pumps in the second-stage pumping station at the Płaszów Sewage Treatment Plant. This optimization, in turn, translates into real savings in the form of electricity consumption.

The implementation of the described control system brought savings of up to 8%. Taking into account the current electricity prices (which in the case of industrial recipients have increased fivefold over the last few years), the described solution already brings savings of almost PLN 200,000 per year.
