On July 14, 2019, the new Söderström Bridge for the railway line through central Stockholm was transported from Västerås to Stockholm on the Lake Mälaren. The bridge had been delivered in 3 segments from Tallinn and needed to be assembled together to the complete 200 m long bridge prior to lifting it in place in Stockholm. As the harbors on the Lake Mälaren closer to Stockholm did not have enough space for this task, the harbor in Västerås was chosen for the assembly. On July 14, it was time to ship the 200 m long and 1400 tons heavy bridge over approximately 62 nm (115 km) to Stockholm, one of the largest special transports one the Lake Mälaren for a long time. The speed was a maximum of 5 knots (9 km/h), so the transport lasted some 14 hours. Nearly 5 hours after departure from Västerås, the transport appeared around the third of three narrow bends just before the swing bridge Hjulstabron on the National Road 55 between Enköping and Strängnäs, some 21 nm (39 km) from Västerås. The bridge needed to be open for about 20 minutes, so, huge queues of waiting cars had formed on both sides, taking a couple of minutes to dissolve after the transport had passed.
