Balakrishnan elected as CPM’s Tamil Nadu state secretary
TUTICORIN: Former legislator K Balakrishnan was elected as CPM’s Tamil Nadu state secretary on the final day of the party’s 22nd state conference in Tuticorin on Tuesday. He succeeds G Ramakrishnan, who has held the position for three terms from February 2010.

ccording to a release from the party, election was held for 79 state council member positions.
Balakrishnan was unanimously elected for the position of the state secretary. He enrolled in the party in the year 1970 during his student days in Annamalai University, Chidambaram.
In 1972, he was expelled from the college for fighting for the rights of the students. The next year, he was elected as the Students Federation of India’s first state president. He held various positions in the party’s Tamil Nadu Vivasayegal Sangam in the district and state level before he was elevated as the party’s Cuddalore district secretary in 1989.
Balakrishnan was elected to the party’s state council from 1982 and elected to the state executive council in 1998. In 2011, he was elected as the MLA of Chidambaram assembly segment and was the party whip in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. In 2012 he was elevated as the party’s central committee member.
