Fast and muscular, the Bluetick Coonhound dog breed stands out for its striking coat. They have a pleasantly pleading expression and a big bawl mouth — meaning they have a long, drawn-out bark. Although they’re a hunter first and foremost, the Bluetick can be a fine housedog and loves their people.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Bluetick Coonhounds that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Hound Dogs
Weight: 45 to 100 pounds
Height: 23 to 30 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 10 to 12 years
The Bluetick Coonhound is a breed of Coonhound originating in the United States. The Bluetick Coonhound is known for its friendly persona, cold nose, and deep bawl mouth. It is most commonly used as a raccoon hunting dog, but may also be kept as a pet.
Bluetick Coonhounds are bred to be hunting dogs. They are athletic, hardy, and need a full-time job or activity such as hunting, obedience, or agility to stay happy. They can be challenging to train and they should be monitored around cats or other small animals. They are, like their hound counterparts, a very intelligent breed that has an uncanny talent for problem-solving.
Once trained, the members of the breed are very mindful of their owners. Something first-time pet owners should be aware of is the daunting task of "voice-training" these dogs. Being bred to bay while hunting, they are highly vocal. If properly socialized from a young age, they can be family pets.
These dogs have a noble history, being descendants of the French Grand Bleu de Gascogne and the English Foxhound, many of whom were brought to the United States in colonial times. On the trail, the Bluetick may be slower than some of his coonhound compatriots, but he has a superior nose and a never-say-die attitude.
Although he's a hunter first and foremost, the Bluetick can be a fine housedog and loves his people. Bear in mind that hounds are a challenge to train. Be patient and persistent as you help them find their motivation, which is more likely to be food than any real desire to please.
