We spent New Year’s Eve and New Year’s day hiking Egmont National Park on the western coast of New Zealand's North Island. Here the volcano Taranaki (or Mt Egmont as it is also known) rules supreme, and each hike we took offered spectacular views of the North Island, the Tasmanian Sea and the volcano. We were able to Freedom Camp at the Dawson Falls Visitors Center both nights. On the first day we hiked the Ridge Loop Track for 5.2 miles. This remarkably diverse track offered waterfalls, forested area and a spectacular treeline that once cleared gave a great view of the volcano. On the second day we challenged ourselves with several combined tracks that resulted in 5.7 miles of steady straight up the hill climb to again, another fantastic view.
