On March 6, 1908, the name “The Sacramento Bee” appeared on the masthead of The Bee’s newspaper. On February 3, 1857, “The Daily Bee” was first published and that name appeared in the masthead of the newspaper until January 6, 1890 when it was changed to “The Evening Bee.” The newspaper finally changed to The Sacramento Bee and the name has appeared on the masthead ever since. The reason for the name change was published on the 4th page of the day’s paper.
The newspaper states, “[P]ublishers have recognized for a long time the fact that the name did not sufficiently identify the paper with its field, hence the change to a more fitting and comprehensive title. The new name indicates not alone The Bee’s home city of publication, but as well the imperial valley of the Sacramento of which The Bee is conceded to have been and to be the greatest and most consistent journalistic exponent.”
The newspaper still remains today as The Sacramento Bee, and it is the longest running newspaper in Sacramento.
