World Ocean Day Webinar – Recorded Mon, 10 Jun 2024
In celebration of World Oceans Day, we are excited to present a webinar featuring two of our climate ambassadors. They discuss their work in marine mammal ecology, coastal biodiversity, and conservation efforts.
Sarah Hegarty is a Green-Schools Travel Officer, teaching about sustainable travel and climate action around County Clare. She has a degree in Freshwater & Marine Biology and a Masters in Conservation Behaviour She has worked in a number of areas such as aquaria, fisheries science, marine protected area research, and manta ray research. A previous Climate Ambassador and regular at CleanCoast beach cleans for over a decade, last year, with 2 other An Taisce colleagues, she set up BannerGleo Liscannor Bay Association, a community group focused on coastal biodiversity and protection in her area.
Dr Joanne O’Brien is a lecturer and researcher in marine mammal ecology and bioacoustics and joined An Tasice as a Climate Ambassador in 2024. She graduated with an Honours degree in Marine Science from NUIG and obtained a PhD from GMIT. Since 2004, she has conducted numerous offshore and inshore marine mammal visual and acoustic surveys aboard state research vessels. Her research interests include marine mammals, bioacoustics, the effects of anthropogenic noise, soundscapes, and habitat modelling. Additionally, she is actively involved in acoustic research across a range of freshwater and terrestrial species.
The Climate Ambassador programme is Ireland’s first-ever initiative to train and support individuals taking action on climate change. The programme is co-ordinated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce with support from the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications.
