21st March 2015 is the “UN INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST RACISM”, a day when the people across the globe show their opposition to racism and discrimination. This annual event declared as a memorial by the United Nations in response to the murder of 69 anti-apartheid demonstrators in Sharpeville, South Africa, in 1960. Proclaiming the day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
Ireland has a long history of immigration and ethnic diversity – and of standing up to racism. In 1845, former American slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass was rapturously received during a four month tour of Cork, Dublin and Belfast – forging a lasting relationship with Daniel O’Connell, whose strong opposition to slavery was reinforced by his friendship with the American campaigner. In 1902, the Irish socialist and union leader James Connolly issued an election leaflet in Yiddish aimed at Jewish workers and voters in Dublin’s Wood Quay ward. Closer to our own time, in 1984, twelve Dunnes Stores workers embarked on a gruelling three-year dispute over their refusal to handle South African goods – and those same workers were among the crowds lining Dublin’s streets in 1990 to welcome Nelson Mandela on one of his first trips abroad after being released from prison. The challenges are different today, but #M21 Ireland is continuing that tradition of fighting racism and celebrating diversity”.
