The Academy of Medical Sciences 2017 FORUM Lecture, delivered by Professor Kevin Tracey, explored the mind-body interface.
With the FORUM lecture now in its 15th year, the Academy was delighted to welcome Professor Tracey, CEO of the US Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in New York, to present a keynote speech on 'Molecular mechanisms in bioelectronic medicine'.
Professor Tracey described how his research has opened up our understanding of how the brain communicates with the immune system, and how new implants may revolutionise the treatment of many diseases through altering these electrical signals.
Following the lecture, Professor Tracey joined a panel chaired by Professor Sir Robert Lechler PMedSci. The wide-ranging discussion considered the future impact of bioelectronics on other areas of medicine, particularly mental health and depression, as well as the importance of changing medical culture to treat the mind and body in parallel. Panel participants included Professor Ed Bullmore FMedSci, Professor Matthew Hotopf FMedSci, Professor Brenda Penninx, and Melissa Smith.
