The fall of Antwerp in 1585 led to a mass exodus from the southern Netherlands. Protestant families, rich and poor, flee to the north. Looking for opportunities to practice their faith, looking for a job. The newcomers with their capital and labor power give the economy an enormous boost. In some cities such as Leiden, a real immigration policy is even emerging. Can we conclude that without immigrants there would have been no Golden Age at all? This episode focuses on the city of Leiden and Jan van Hout as secretary of that city. Speakers include historian Leo Lucassen and city guide Cor Smit.
