Mercedes-Benz has made significant progress in combining high performance with advanced electrification through the introduction of the new AMG E-Class "53" series. This series includes electrified versions available in both sedan and wagon body styles, demonstrating the brand's dedication to delivering versatile, eco-friendly performance without compromising luxury and power.
The AMG E53 remains strong in the power department while maintaining its green credentials. It features a powerful inline-six engine, now upgraded to produce 443 horsepower, an increase from the previous model's 429 hp. This engine is paired with an electric motor, adding 161 hp to achieve a total system output of 577 hp. When maximum power is needed, the AMG E53 offers a Race Start function, similar to launch control, boosting the output to 603 hp for a short period. The car also delivers an impressive torque of 553 lb-ft, a significant increase from the previous model's 384 lb-ft.
In terms of acceleration, the sedan version can go from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds, while the slightly heavier wagon model achieves this in 3.9 seconds. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, which can be increased to 174 mph for the sedan and 171 mph for the wagon with the optional AMG Driver's Package. On electric power alone, the new E53 models can reach up to 87 mph, highlighting their versatility and modern design.
This series includes a plug-in hybrid system with a battery pack under the trunk floor, offering a 21.22 kWh capacity and over 62 miles of electric-only range. The battery powers an electric motor integrated into the nine-speed automatic transmission, optimizing space without sacrificing performance.
Beyond its electrified capabilities, the AMG E53 stands out with enhancements for both sedan and wagon forms. It features a stiffer body structure, larger brakes, and standard rear-wheel steering. The adaptive suspension with variable damping and the fully variable AWD system ensures a dynamic yet stable driving experience. In terms of design, the sporty E-Class "53" variants, including the wagon, have wider front fenders, an illuminated grille, and quad exhaust tips, giving them an aggressive yet elegant look.
As Mercedes-Benz continues to innovate in the luxury electric vehicle market, the AMG E-Class "53" series, especially its wagon variant, exemplifies the brand's commitment to performance and sustainability. These electrified models mark a new era for Mercedes-Benz, blending the practicality and style of the estate form with the excitement of AMG performance.
