The Biden administration has pushed for the release of Paul Rusesabagina, a rescuer in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. However, Rwanda's president, Paul Kagame, claims that only an invasion of his country could compel him to do so.
“We’ve made it clear there isn’t anyone going to come from anywhere to bully us into something to do with our lives,” Mr. Kagame said in response to a question about Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken’s appeals for Mr. Rusesabagina’s freedom.
Mr. Rusesabagina, 68, worked as the manager of the Hôtel des Mille Collines in Kigali during the genocide, which served as the basis for the film "Hotel Rwanda." More than 1,000 individuals were at risk of being murdered in the hotel; all of them survived. President George W. Bush honoured Mr. Rusesabagina with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
He has long been a critic of Rwanda's president, who was previously lauded as a peacemaker but has subsequently been widely condemned as a dictatorial strongman. Mr. Kagame lured Mr. Rusesabagina to Rwanda on false pretences in August 2020 and has been detained since.
