Brazil surpasses 500,000 COVID-19 deaths as people protest in streets
Thousands of people took to the streets of Brazil's cities on Saturday to protest President Jair Bolsonaro's handling of the pandemic, as the country saw its total death toll from COVID-19 surpass 500,000.
People expressed their anger in at least 44 cities, including frustration over Bolsonaro not making early efforts to acquire COVID-19 vaccines. The country only has 11.4 per cent fully vaccinated, according to the government.
Bolsonaro has often faced criticism over how he has approached the pandemic, including dismissing it as a "little flu" early on, as well as scorning masks.
