PNF is a 'contract - relax your muscles' method, which is best done AFTER a training, climbing etc. session when you are properly warmed up.
The research paper says that if done several days per week it might increase your range of motion (ROM) and flexibility.
However, if done prior to the exercise PNF routine might decrease your performance of high intensity exercises where maximal muscle effort is required. For example if you want to lift weights, climb, jump - do the PNF stretching routine after your training session, not before.
