In the year 1542, in the depths of the Brazilian jungles, a group of Spanish conquistadors led by Francisco De Orellana attempt to become the first Europeans to travel the whole of the river they call the “Rio Negro”. Over the past few months, they have encountered all manner of hardships, from disease, to inclement weather, to hostile encounters with native tribes on whose lands they are trespassing.
But, on June 24th, after weeks of encountering increasing numbers of hostile native tribesmen, they will finally meet the natives in pitched battle.
Launching a full-on assault of the beach head, the Spaniards ram their boat on their shore, and begin a vicious hand to hand fight against thousands of native warriors. With their firearms and crossbows, the Spanish are able to initially hold the native warriors off, but then, a sight a that will forever mystify historians appears before them.
According to official first-hand accounts, several very large, very tall women, appeared from the jungle, with bows, arrows, and shields, and began to fight with unfettered fury.
They killed not only the Spanish, but any of their own warriors who tried to flee. The battle that will unfold between the Conquistadors and these warriors, whom history would remember as “The Amazons”, will go down in history as one of the most consequential, and mysterious, events ever to take place in the New World.
