International Abhidhamma Divas commemorates Lord Buddha's descent from the celestial realm after delivering the Abhidhamma, regarded as his 'Higher Teaching. This year, the International Abhidhamma Divas celebration, organised by the Ministry of culture and the International Buddhist Confederation, was graced by the participation of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The event brought together academicians and monks from 14 countries, along with a significant number of young experts on Buddha Dhamma from various universities across India.The recent recognition of Pali as a classical language, alongside four other languages, added to the significance of this year’s celebrations. Lord Buddha's teachings on the Abhidhamma are originally preserved in the Pali language, making this acknowledgment particularly meaningful for the event.
