In today’s video Bob Paulinski Master of Wine discusses Cabernet Sauvignon. He’ll I’ll take a deep dive into five Cabernet Sauvignons from five different regions, discussing why they are different from one another and what you can expect in your wine glass. All of the wines in this video are solid values and can broadly be found from between $20 to $30 (USD) per bottle. In this video, Bordeaux will not be part of the discussion, that will be its own separate video in the not-too-distant future.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted wine grape variety in the world with over 340,000 hectares. It’s also a grape that hasn’t been all that long, dating back to only the 17th century. Through DNA testing nearly 30 years ago, it was found the parent vines were Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. While the origins link to SW France, it’s reach is nearly global, with many of the world’s top wines being produced by it as a solo variety and often as part of a blend. The thick berry skins help to keep the fruit disease free and it provides for plenty of extraction. The wine styles can vary tremendously, based a range of factors like vineyard location, vine clones, vine age, and cropping levels. The wines tend to be deep, dense, with a with a good affinity with oak. The better bottlings have very good cellaring potential, transforming themselves over several years with developed tertiary characteristics.
