One year after the killing of George Floyd, calls for police reform continue around the nation. A 2019 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences suggested the Black men and boys are killed by police at a rate of 96 per 100,000 deaths, compared to white men and boys, who are killed by police at a rate of 39 per 100,000 deaths. While Congress still has not passed police reform legislation in response to Floyd’s death, patchwork efforts in cities and states have been underway all year.
