(5 May 2015) Hundreds of revellers in Mexico City commemorated the 153rd anniversary of the Battle of Puebla on Tuesday with a parade and re-enactment of the famous battle, when Mexican troops defeated the French army in 1862.
Residents of Penon de los Banos, a neighbourhood in the east of the capital, dressed in costumes representing soldiers from both sides, as well as the "Zacapoaxtlas", an indigenous tribe who helped the Mexican army defeat the French.
During the explosive celebration, which has been held for the last 84 years, performers fired guns and cannons while others danced and played music.
Participants were re-enacting the battle fought between the two sides in 1862 in which the Mexican troops defeated the troops of Napoleon III, then considered the mightiest military in the world.
