Around Falkirk East in 80 Days: Redding.
In 1923, the small community of Redding suffered the worst disaster in the history of Scottish coalfields with Number 23 pit experiencing an inrush of water.
A massive operation took place to rescue the trapped miners and 26 men were rescued. Sadly it claimed the lives of 40 men.
The Free Colliers still march every August in memory of the men who died.
A fund was established by the Provost of Falkirk and the Falkirk Herald, which raised £60,000 pounds or £1 million pounds in today's money. An inquiry was held and a number of future recommendations for safety were made.
