2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Review: Italian Flair Meets Electrification
The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale marks the Italian automaker's entry into the hotly contested subcompact luxury SUV segment. With its striking design and plug-in hybrid powertrain, the Tonale aims to stand out in a crowded field dominated by German rivals.
Starting at $45,440, the Tonale showcases Alfa Romeo's signature styling cues, including the iconic triangular grille and sleek body lines. The interior continues the Italian flair with a driver-centric layout, circular air vents, and premium materials like leather and microsuede.
Under the hood, the Tonale features a plug-in hybrid system combining a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. This setup produces a respectable 285 horsepower and offers over 30 miles of all-electric range. The powertrain is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.
In our testing, the Tonale Veloce sprinted from 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds, demonstrating decent acceleration for its class. However, the driving experience left something to be desired. While the Giulia and Stelvio set high benchmarks for Alfa Romeo's dynamics, the Tonale falls short with isolated steering feel and less controlled body motions through corners.
The Tonale's interior impresses with its 10.3-inch touchscreen running Uconnect 5 software, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster further enhances the tech-forward cabin. Standard driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automated emergency braking.
Fuel economy is a strong point, with the EPA rating the Tonale at 77 MPGe combined. In our real-world testing, we achieved the full 33 miles of electric range before the gas engine kicked in.
While the Tonale brings Italian style and electrification to the segment, it faces stiff competition from established players like the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. Its higher starting price and somewhat disappointing driving dynamics may give some buyers pause.
The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale ultimately delivers on style and efficiency but falls short of the engaging driving experience we've come to expect from the brand. For those seeking Italian flair in a compact package, the Tonale offers a unique alternative to its German rivals, albeit with some compromises.
