Calgary RASC used some of our AGLC: Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis funds (we are the recipient of proceeds from casinos we run through the ALGC; we don't receive funds from liquor or cannabis) to purchase an adjustable-height pier for the Celestron 14" telescope at the University of Calgary's Rothney Astrophysical Observatory.
This telescope is primarily used for student projects and for public outreach, including at open-to-the-public observing nights where volunteers from Calgary RASC help operate this and other telescopes owned by the University, as well as set up their personal telescopes to show the public some of the wonders of the night sky.
Here we see Larry McNish, RASC Calgary member and volunteer, and also the prime mover on making this pier project possible, demonstrating the operation of the adjustable pier, which, despite its up and down motion, maintains the precise polar alignment of the telescope mount at all times.
This is the same telescope that previously "starred" in our meridian flip video, created by Larry McNish, when it was tripod-mounted.
