The family of Officer Brian Sicknick, along with police in his New Jersey hometown, lowered a flag to half staff to honor him on Tuesday morning.
Sicknick died on January 6 as attackers overran the Capitol building in Washington DC to stop the certification of Democrat Joe Biden as the next president.
At the flag ceremony in South River, NJ, U.S. Senator Bob Menendez said he would do everything possible to make sure that those responsible for Sicknick's death are brought to justice.
The FBI has also opened a murder probe into the death of Sicknick, who was hit in the head with a fire extinguisher.
Word of the probe comes from law enforcement officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.
