On the 18th of March 2017, the Victorian Goldfields Railway operated a special charter with steam locomotive K153 (on loan from Steamrail Victoria).
The charter was operated to celebrate the official opening of the Castlemaine to Maldon Rail Trail with deflector-less K153 hauling a passenger service from Castlemaine Muckleford and return.
The 17.7 kilometre pathway was officially opened by Hon. Maree Edwards, Member for Bendigo West.

The Castlemaine to Maldon Trail allows walkers and cyclists to enjoy stunning natural surroundings as they travel alongside the historic Victorian Goldfields Railway. There is a feature boardwalk to the north of the Muckleford Railway Station, along with an accessible crossing over Muckleford Creek.

The trail was funded by the Victorian Government's local infrastructure fund.
This was K153s first trip of the year after a summer of maintenance and cosmetic work.
