Tapio Lehtinen is one of the best known Finnish sailors. He did his first circumnavigation in 1981 in the Whitbread Around the World race on Finnish entry Skopbank.
Tapio Lehtinen is better known for his two entries in the Golden Globe Races. In the 2918-19 race he became famous for his valiant struggle to complete the race despite a serious barnacle issue slowing him down so that he arrived in Sables d'Olonne 111 days after the race winner. In the 2022-23 race his fortunes took an even worse turn as his boat Asteria very quickly sunk after having developed a major leak.
Even this event has not stopped Tapio from pursuing his next circumnavigation project, racing in the Ocean Globe Race starting in September 2023. In this race Tapio and crew will sail on Galiana, a Swan 55 yawl built in 1970.
In the video Tapio discusses his Golden Globe and Ocean Globe sailing careers with special emphasis on analysing why Asteria sunk.
