DANNEMORA, NEW YORK — Tougher controls are being added to the Dannemora maximum-security prison that was at the center of of an elaborate jailbreak last month in upper-state New York.
The improvements follow an historic jailbreak which saw two inmates, Richard Matt and David Sweat, escape and lead authorities on a three week manhunt. Matt and Sweat used various tools, special privileges and bribed guards in the run up to their June 6 jailbreak.
As part of the changes, the honor block, an area of the facility where inmates could move around freely outside their cells, will be canceled.
Guards will now check the structural integrity of cells once a week, as well as the prison catwalk and amperage on electrical panels. Prison executives will also be present for inmate headcounts and other security procedures.
Other enhancements include the installation of gates in tunnels, additional security measures for the storage of power tools and the usage of heart detection monitors.
