Antipyretics are medicines that lower fever. The hypothalamus is forced by antipyretics to override a prostaglandin-induced rise in body temperature. The fever eventually lessens as a result of the body's efforts to lower the temperature. The majority of antipyretic drugs also serve additional functions.

Analgesics, commonly known as painkillers, are drugs that treat a variety of pains, such as headaches, injuries, and arthritis. Both opioid analgesics and anti-inflammatory analgesics alter how the brain interprets pain. While certain analgesics can be purchased without a prescription, others need one.
