The third Focus on Forage webinar in the 2023 series features alternative forage production information. Presenters are Bill Halfman, UW-Madison Division of Extension Beef Outreach Specialist; Dr. John Jones, UW Madison Soil Scientist; and Jason Cavadini, UW Madison Division of Extension Grazing Outreach Specialist.
The webinar was designed to improve utilization and management of winter and summer annual forages, as well as improve pasture management with the overall goal of improving on-farm profitability.
Halfman details how different types of annual forages can fit into a beef grazing system to maximize the grazing season in WI, decrease forage deficit likelihood, and even offer safer beef calving options. Jones relays results of multiple on-farm studies performed in WI that aim to fine-tune nitrogen management decision-making for farms raising both winter annual small grain forages and summer annual forages and forage mixes. Cavidini discusses and answers the various questions which grazing herd managers ask about how, when, and with what in regards to pasture renovation techniques.
More information on these topics can be found through the Crops and Soils and Livestock Program web pages at [ Ссылка ] and [ Ссылка ] respectively.
