The Curtiss-Wright XP-55 Ascender was a prototype fighter aircraft developed by Curtiss-Wright Corporation during World War II. It was designed as an experimental aircraft to test new concepts and technologies for fighter aircraft design.
The XP-55 Ascender was a unique aircraft with an unusual inverted gull wing design, where the main wing was angled downward and the outer wing was angled upward. This configuration was intended to improve the aircraft's stability and maneuverability, and to provide better visibility for the pilot.
The XP-55 Ascender was also designed with a pusher propeller at the rear of the aircraft, which was intended to provide greater speed and performance. The aircraft was powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine, and had a top speed of over 600 km/h (370 mph) and a range of over 1,600 km (1,000 miles).
The first XP-55 Ascender prototype made its maiden flight in July 1943, and testing revealed that the aircraft had good maneuverability and handling, but suffered from poor visibility and stability. Despite these issues, a total of three prototypes were built, and the aircraft was evaluated by the United States Army Air Forces.
However, the XP-55 Ascender did not enter production, primarily due to the availability of other more successful fighter aircraft designs, such as the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang. The prototype aircraft were eventually retired and scrapped.
The XP-55 Ascender remains an interesting and unique aircraft in the history of fighter aircraft design, and its innovative features paved the way for future aircraft designs.
