There are dozens of toxic and acidic pits near homes in many areas of the United Kingdom which are impacting the livelihoods of residents.
An investigation has found local councils have officially recorded 34 acid tar lagoons - but the government lists only two in England.
The pits were created when oil refineries dumped thousands of tonnes of toxic materials in the 1960s and 70s and contain extremely hazardous and corrosive liquids.
However, one solution which has been proposed to clean up the toxic pits involves covering the tar with spent mushroom compost and planting willow trees on top to rid the areas of their dangerous acidity.
