Kansai International Airport, located in Osaka, Japan's second-largest city, has sunk over 38 feet since it first opened 30 years ago. This massive airport, which cost £15 billion to build, sits on two man-made islands in Osaka Bay. It's a key airport for Asian airlines like All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, and Nippon Cargo Airlines. However, the airport is sinking faster than expected and is moving away from the city. Engineers originally thought the islands would settle down evenly over 50 years and then stabilize 13 feet above sea level. This height is crucial to keep the airport safe from flooding if the surrounding seawall is breached. But the islands hit this critical point in just six years, leading to £117 million spent on raising the seawall. Some people think this was a wasted effort to stop what seems unavoidable.
