Originally built as the mausoleum of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, the structure takes its name from the miraculous appearance of St. Michael in 590 CE. Legend claims that the archangel sheathed his sword to mark the end of a plague, as represented today by the statue at the top of castle. In the 14th century, the popes transformed the mausoleum into a fortress, and connected it to the papal palace via the “Passetto” – or papal escape route. Castel Sant’Angelo is the setting for the third act of Puccini’s opera “Tosca,” where the heroine leaps to her death!
