Hello everyone! Over the weekend, we planted a bulb lawn in the backyard. To extend the season, we planted early to late-blooming varieties. We’re planting hyacinths, tulips, daffodils, early snow glories, crocuses, grape hyacinths, winter aconite, and Grecian windflowers. The smaller bulbs will be planted throughout the lawn and around the fruit trees!
In the Netherlands, this method of planting flower bulbs is called Stinzenplanten. This type of garden is centuries old and was cultivated with naturalizing wildflowers, both native and imported. These are considered stinzen plants or vintage bulbs and were introduced to Western Europe in the 16th century by explorers and botanists.
Over time, these bulbs will increase, putting on a spectacular display of gorgeous blooms from late winter through spring and providing a food source for pollinators and other wildlife.
I’m excited for spring and can’t wait to show you the results. Stay tuned!
