Today's video is a very early morning walk through a dark garden still gripped by the coldest night we've had in a while, looking at how microclimates and overhead protection affect the tropical style garden, (lazy / efficient) frost protection fleece for the more tender plants and how a lot of evergreen plants react to the cold. Whilst I wouldn't say the actual fleecing is a take home lesson, hopefully seeing which plants I protect at temperatures of -3 to -5 is, seeing which ones I leave to it and what damage I expect and live with at these temperatures is reassuring and the microclimate info can you help you with your planting this spring. I cover a lot of the plants in the garden from tougher evergreens like Fatsia japonica 'Spiders Web', Rhododendron sinogrande, Phyllostachys bamboos, Trachycarpus fortunei, Butia and Jubaea chilensis palms through to plants that have some protection like the Musa basjoo banana plants, Gunnera manicata and my more exposed tree ferns through to other plants that I am prepared for them taking some level of damage, Echium pininana and my Cyathea medullaris black tree fern.
