The right to own a gun is protected by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, yet many say that easy access to firearms could lead to an increase in violent crime. Although most states require a background check before a person is allowed to purchase an arm, the Violence Policy Center says the restrictions are too lenient. Gun sales in the U.S. have doubled since 1988, when the background check was established. Many say that a gun is essential in a country where violence increases every day, while others point to the use of guns in civilian massacres such as that of Sandy Hook to promote stronger gun control.
