LEAD IN :
Every year the Spanish city of Valencia hosts a week-long celebration that culminates on Saint Joseph's day (March 19), the city's patron saint day.
The "fallas" fiestas are some of Europe's most famous festivals.
STORYLINE:
Heavy rain did not dampen revellers spirits as daytime fireworks, famous for their intense noise, echoed across Valencia's city centre at the start of the annual Fallas festival.
The "Mascleta" is an audio and visual fireworks' display that takes place every day at noon in front of the town hall during the festival.
But the highlight of the fiesta is the burning of the grotesque gigantic papier mache figures.
Fallas is the culmination of the work and effort of an entire year.
The 'ninots' and 'fallas' are the expression of a unique kind of art using large wooden structures covered with painted papier-mache or more recently polystyrene.
