In Direct to garment (DTG) printing, it is essential to have a consistent printing process from beginning to finished product. However, minor circumstances affects the consistency and quality from t-shirt to t-shirt.
When starting up a Direct to Garment printer, majority of the printers initializes to stir the White Ink and CMYK Inks. Listed are the tips for the initial start up on DTG printers, ensuring an excellent end result in your production.
Printing a Nozzle check - the nozzle check allows you to determine the condition of your print head, CMYK Inks, and White Ink. If the outcome of the nozzle check shows breakage in the printed result, this means the Nozzle of your printhead are clogged with the Inks, thus performing a cleaning routine until the result of the Nozzle check is flawless.
Pre-treatment on T-shirts - basically an inconsistent pre-treated t-shirt will result to a faulty quality t-shirt, whereas a consistent pre-treated t-shirt will result to an excellent finished product.
There are two types of pre-treatment, an automated pre-treatment machine, and a handheld power sprayer. Unfortunately, there are no other adopted procedure for pretreatment production. However, an automatic pretreatment machine is considered the exclusive way to achieve the precise quality a particular t-shirt brand and/or style will match the real true outcome, and other sequential orders by clients. On the contrary, handheld pre-treatment can also be used equally as the automatic pretreatment machine, although it requires elaborate practice and experience.
RIP or Raster Image Processor Software - the RIP software allows you to raster any image or artwork/design to be printed on your t-shirt.
It allows you to archive the images you have already printed for your returning clients, and would be beneficial for new clients. Sequentially, establishing consistency on the print outcome is through assuring the propping of the t-shirt, by having the collar to be on the edge of the DTG platen, and referring to the archived image to be on the corresponding position. Thus, granting uniformity and unvarying excellent print results.
DTG printers are unique than most garment printing technologies. In order to achieve the excellent quality, you are striving for, caring for the DTG printers’ environment is called for, needing to be in a controlled environment with a minimum of 40% humidity. Although for instance, some DTG printer owners or operators, conclude that the environment and humidity are in good condition for the DTG printer because they are not encountering any ink clogging issues. But that is not the case, the print head of the DTG printer will overheat if the printers’ environment is in low-humidity level. The ink tends to harden in the print head, thus encountering clogging issues. Therefore, having a low humidity environment will be costly due to ink wastage, and time wasted by having the print head constantly cleaned.
Another essential point in any printing method is the quality control. In DTG printing, the print outcome is judged by its washability and appearance results. Hence, the end quality result will tell you a lot from the washing test. It is helpful to print a sample t-shirt whilst production and then proceed to test wash it, because it would show you whether you have a fault in your pretreatment or curing in your direct to garment printing.
