What is Backwards Compatibility? Can PS5 play PS3 games? Will Xbox Series S play Xbox One games? With PS5 and Xbox Series X releasing in little over a month, these Backwards Compatibility questions are still being asked.
In this video we discuss why backwards compatibility is important, why PS5 should be backwards compatible, the architectural issues of PS1 PS2 PS3, and how PlayStation could introduce backwards compatibility through it's game streaming service PS NOW as a last resort, leading to PS NOW vs Game Pass.
PlayStation have cleared up why can't PS5 play PS1, PS2, PS3 games; but they should work on creating a sustainable backwards compatibility solution. Whether that's a Game Pass for PlayStation - PS5 game streaming via PS NOW - or software based emulation.
Xbox have a lead with their highly consumer friendly backwards compatibility plan using Xbox Game Pass, where even Xbox Series S can play Xbox One games through it's service. With Xbox Series X and the Xbox Ecosystem supporting previous console generations through backwards compatibility, Xbox is looking like a great place to play.
